Biodata of Archbishop

BIO DATA OF MOST REV. DR. PETER FERNANDO

Archbishop Peter Fernando was born on 22.03.1939 in a coastal village called Idinthakarai of Tuticorin diocese. The studies which he had are the following:

St.Mary’s Seminary, U. S. A.
Ph.D in Psychotherapy:
Kent State University, U. S. A.

The specialization he had in Counselling and Psychotherapy enabled him to understand a person in compassion and love. He was ordained a priest on 29.05.1971 in Cleaveland, Ohio (U.S.A) itself where he was doing his theological studies. Later he did the above mentioned higher studies in U.S.A.

After 10 years of service in NVSC, Pune, National Vocation Service Centre, the Institute for Pastoral Counselling and Religious Formation, he was appointed the Rector of St. Paul’s Seminary, Trichy, Tamilnadu. In 1993 he returned to his native diocese as he was appointed as the Vicar General. On May 29th 1996, he became the Coadjutor Bishop of his own native diocese, Tuticorin. Since the neighboring diocese of Trichy became vacant, His Holiness Pope John Paul II appointed him as the Apostolic administrator of Trichy diocese in 1997. On December 8th, 1999 when Bishop Amalanathar of Tuticorin retired, Most Rev. Peter Fernando automatically became the Bishop of Tuticorin diocese. He took canonical possession of the See on 14th, December 1999. He also continued as the administrator of Trichy diocese till January 2001.
On 24th, April 2003, he was appointed as the Archbishop of Madurai Archdiocese besides his Office as the Administrator of Tuticorin Diocese.
Archbishop Peter Fernando is an erudite scholar and he has offered lectures and conducted seminars and retreats for many religious in India.
